Uerige Doppelsticke (altbier)

Uerige Doppelsticke

Uerige Doppelsticke Altbier

Uerige Doppelsticke is my hands down my favorite German beer of all time.  I know that’s a big statement, but this heavyweight lives up to the bill.

Half Ale, Half Lager

Alts are a very cool style of beer that is based more on yeast variety and fermentation temperature than on taste and appearance profiles. Alt beers, in a sense, are half ale and half lager. These beer are fermented first slowly at warmer temperatures (Ale attribute), and then go through a long conditioning process at colder temperatures (lagering).  The finished products have fruity characteristics of ales, yet finish dry and clean, a trait more common in lagers. The Uerige Doppelsticke takes this a step further.

This beer starts off with an enormous grain bill similar to that of an English Barley Wines, although in this one they add a large amount of wheat as well. Then it’s aggressively hopped with Spalter and undergoes classic alt style fermentation.

Uerige Doppelsticke Flavor Notes

A lightly carbonated beauty, Uerige Doppelsticke Alt pours mahogany with rich plum, fig, brown sugar, and spice notes. It has a warming, but dry and tight finish that hides the 8.5% Alc/Vol. Hops add to its complexity creating an herbal aroma that balances it’s vinous, port-like qualities.

Recommended Pairing

Try this beer with your favorite German cuisine, earthy cheeses, and chocolate desserts.  As per usual with anything this great, quantities are limited so hurry in to get one while supplies last!

Cheers,

Tyler
